1911 - Union Chapel (Flohrville UMC), Sykesville, MD
The town of Flohrville, between Sykesville and Eldersburg was founded by a religious farmer of German descent. In 1911, Jeremiah Flohr, erected and gave a church to the community which was named for him. Although his parents belonged to the United Brethren Church, Jeremiah wished his church to be non-sectarian, "a union of all churches". He called it Union Chapel. Jeremiah built the church, furnished it with iron benches and preached the first sermon, as there was no minister then. Later the church became a stop for the Circuit Riders of the Methodist Episcopal Church. The deed of 1912, presented to the trustees of Union Chapel, stated that any Protestant denomination could hold services in the church. It was noted in the deed that a service must be held at least once a year in the church or the heirs to the Flohr family would void the deed.
